AI Resume Matcher

The Challenge

Hiring teams often spend hours manually comparing resumes against job descriptions, repeating the same evaluation process across hundreds of candidates.

While LLMs can automate this work, running expensive AI models on every application quickly becomes impractical at scale.

I wanted to build a recruiting platform that could intelligently screen candidates while minimizing inference costs, using AI only where it added meaningful value.

The Solution

AI Resume Matcher is a full-stack recruiter intelligence platform that automates candidate screening, ranking, and pipeline management.

Instead of sending every resume directly to an LLM, the platform uses a multi-stage evaluation pipeline that combines deterministic scoring with optional AI reasoning.

Multi-Stage Candidate Evaluation

The screening pipeline operates in two stages:

Stage 1 — Intelligent Heuristic Scoring

Every resume is first evaluated using lightweight algorithms, including:

• Keyword overlap

• Semantic similarity

• Resume structure analysis

• Skills and experience matching

This provides fast, low-cost candidate rankings without requiring AI inference.

Stage 2 — AI-Powered Evaluation

For candidates requiring deeper analysis, an LLM generates:

• Role fit assessment

• Strengths and weaknesses

• Hiring rationale

• Natural language summaries for recruiters

By reserving AI for high-value evaluations, the platform significantly reduces infrastructure costs while maintaining decision quality.

Full-Stack Architecture

The backend was built using FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, and PostgreSQL (Supabase) with JWT-based authentication for secure access.

The frontend, built with React and Tailwind CSS, provides recruiters with a streamlined workflow for:

• Creating job descriptions

• Uploading resumes

• Reviewing ranked candidates

• Tracking applicants through the hiring pipeline

Outcome

AI Resume Matcher evolved into a complete recruiter workflow MVP that streamlines early-stage hiring without making AI the default solution for every task.

What I Learned

This project taught me that building AI products isn't just about adding intelligence—it's about knowing where intelligence actually creates value.

Designing a layered evaluation pipeline reinforced the importance of balancing model quality, infrastructure cost, and user experience. In many cases, the best AI system isn't the one that uses the most AI, but the one that uses it deliberately.
